Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC ) is a bitter substance. This can be up to 1000 times better perceived by 70% of Europeans than of the remaining 30 %. Responsible for this is the individual expression patterns of variants of a gene for a particular bitter taste receptor. So is perceived as very " disgusting " by the majority of people PTC at a concentration of 0.1 mM to 10 mM. The rest can not taste PTC at this concentration. The genetic trait for tasting PTC is inherited dominantly.
Chemical Properties
Phenylthiocarbamide is a derivative of thiourea compound.
Use
Phenylthiocarbamyl is used for the synthesis of vulcanization accelerators, dyes, rat poisons and other organic compounds. It continues to be used in studies on the human genome.
Safety
Phenylthiocarbamide is highly toxic (nerve poison).
