Phi Delta Phi

Phi Delta Phi is an international scientific legal fraternity in the form of an Honor Society (English Honor Society ).

Establishment, purpose and character

The Association was founded on 13 December 1869 by four students at the University of Michigan. It is the second oldest legal organization in the United States, which still exists today. Specifically, it was established six months after the Ohio Bar Association and nine years before the American Bar Association.

As Honor Society Phi Delta Phi is represented in the U.S. alone to graduate schools and only takes law students on. The association is apolitical of their orientation and not religious and clearly focused their activities on the service to the community and the education of its members.

The aim of the association is "to promote a higher standard of professional ethics and culture of this and other law schools and the entire profession ." The members want to counter the negative image of lawyers in society and continued professional development and support each other.

With students connections from the German-speaking world and the classic American Fraternities has a Honor Society as Phi Delta Phi little in common: There are both women and men is recorded, it can not find pubs instead and there is no corporation house (as in normal American Fraternities and German compounds often the case). However, is similar to fraternities in addition to the symbolism of colors, slogan or motto and a coat of arms and the desired principle of life-long membership, but not in the form of a mandatory federal life.

Groups, members and organization

There are over 130 groups called Inns, at law schools in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Poland and Germany. The Inns are named in each establishment after a major lawyers who can serve as role models to the members professionally and ethically. In total, over 200,000 members have been added since the founding of the Student Union. Assign this is a lifetime membership, so that the groups of the Union represent an active network between alumni and students, and between users and students of law. In addition to the active ( student ) members and honorary members are admitted, which no longer are themselves of significant legal status, however, active students.

During the over 130 years of existence no other fraternity has produced so many elected officials in the United States. It can be found among the members of Phi Delta Phi several U.S. presidents, countless judges of the Supreme Court (currently three of the nine justices members), senators, congressmen and influential members of the legal matter.
