Phil Hughes

Philip Joseph " Phil" Hughes ( * June 24, 1986 in Mission Viejo, California) is an American baseball player in the major leagues. He currently plays as a starting pitcher for the New York Yankees.

Biography

High School

Hughes attended Foothill High School in Santa Ana, California. In the local baseball team he had a Perfect Game; He also was the first All-American pitcher of his team. In 2003, he scored 12 victories, suffered no defeat and had a 0.78 ERA. In his last year of high school, 2004, supplemented his ERA to 0.69 in nine wins and one defeat.

2004 Hughes was elected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the MLB Drafts ( 23 selected players at all).

Minor Leagues

2005 Hughes played in the Minor Leagues in the Yankees farm system ( Charleston RiverDogs Tampa Yankees and ). After he had scored nine victories in two losses, an ERA of 1:24 and 93 strikeouts in 85 ⅓ innings, he received from the Yankees an invitation to Spring Training in 2006, but returned then back to the Tampa Yankees. In the course of the season he moved to Double-A Trenton Thunder team. Because of his achievements, the magazine Baseball America rated Hughes as the most promising player of the Yankees in the Minor Leagues. After a renewed participation in the Yankees Spring Training Hughes began the 2007 season at Triple -A team Scranton / Wilkes -Barre Yankees. In the list of top 100 most promising player of the magazine Baseball America Hughes occupied the fourth place in 2007.

Major League

On 26 April 2007 Hughes was the second- youngest player in the American League debut against the Toronto Blue Jays. In 4 ⅓ innings he allowed four runs on seven hits and suffered their first defeat in the MLB. In his second start against the Texas Rangers on the other hand it gets a no-hitter for 6 ⅓ innings before he had to leave the mound because of an injury. In the post-season in 2007 Hugh came in game two and three of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Indians as a substitute pitcher used.

Hughes began the 2008 season while with the Yankees, but was sent back after an injury to the Scranton / Wilkes -Barre Yankees. He returned in September 2008 back to the Yankees and even competed in two games that he could both win.

Despite the good performances shown at end of season Hughes was sent back again to the Triple -A team in 2009 and began the season. Late April, he was appointed to the team the Yankees after an injury of Chien- Ming Wang back. By early June Hughes was allowed to stand as Starting Pitcher in seven games; of which he was able to win three games, two he lost. In a game against the Texas Rangers, he threw eight innings without allowing a run. After returning from the injured list Wangs Hughes was sent to the bullpen and came for the rest of the regular season and in the playoffs and the World Series in 2009 as a replacement pitcher for use.

After completing the Spring Training Hughes was nominated for the 2010 season as the fifth starting pitcher for the Yankees. With five wins in a row he laid a strong start and held a no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics in the eighth inning to. In this game with 10 strikeouts he had a Career. After losing a game against the New York Mets, he launched a second series of five games won in a row. In early July he was appointed to the All- Star team of the American League. With 18 wins in the regular season, he was fourth in the American League. In the postseason, he came in both the ALDS and the ALCS as a Starting Pitcher for use.
