Philibert I, Duke of Savoy

Philibert I, known as the Hunter ( * August 7, 1465 in Chambery, † September 22, 1482 in Lyon) was in the years 1472-1482 Duke of Savoy.

Philibert was the son of Duke Amadeus IX. and Yolande of Valois, sister of the French king Louis XI. , which took over the regency for Philibert, who was underage when his father's death in 1472. To promote relations with powerful neighbors Milan, Jolanthe betrothed her son in 1476 at age 11 with Bianca Maria Sforza, daughter of the Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza. Savoy came at this time, however, in a deep crisis, when the Swiss Confederation in 1475, the Vaud country tore itself and Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy in 1476 Jolanthe kidnapped in Geneva. King Louis XI. managed, however, to get them free again. However, they died in 1478. New guardian of the now 13 -year-old Duke was the Bishop of Geneva.

Philibert grew under his approach, however, dealt mainly with feasts and hunts, whence also his nickname comes from. Louis XI. tried to use this situation and to strengthen its influence on Savoy. Philibert died then childless at the age of 17 years, so the rule was transferred to his age of 14 also still underage brother Charles I. Philibert's fiancée Bianca Maria later married the German king Maximilian I, who in 1508 with papal approval proclaimed himself " elected Roman Emperor ".
