Philibert Tsiranana

Philibert Tsiranana ( born October 28, 1912 in Ambarikorano, † April 16, 1978 ) was President of Madagascar from 1960 to 1972.

Tsiranana first studied in Analalava and Antananarivo, in 1946 and then in Montpellier. In 1946 he founded the Parti des déshérités de Madagascar, which passed into the Parti social démocrate 1956. She sat down especially from côtiers together, which should be a counterweight to the Merina in the central highlands, and came, as has been the PADESM, benevolent approval of the colonial power, France. From 1956 to 1959 Tsiranana Deputy in the French National Assembly ( Assemblée nationale ).

In 1959 he successfully ran against Norbert Zafimahova to the office of President. Tsiranana government was the policy of the French settlers (or " colonists " ), who were still in positions of power and sat, unlike many former French colonies, on an anti-communist course in continuity. 1972 protests flared up against this policy and Tsiranana was overthrown. He handed over power in 1972 to General Gabriel Ramanantsoa and his provisional government. After his dismissal, he founded in 1974 the Socialist Party malgache.

Philibert Tsiranana was married to the 15 year younger Justine Tsiranana.
