Philinidae

Open Seemandel ( Philina aperta )

The Philinidae are a family of small to medium-sized, exclusively marine snails in the order of the head shield screws ( Cephalaspidea ). The world's widespread predatory snails have a thin inner shell.

Features

The snail is translucent milky to yellowish white with opaque white dots. The whitish, thin-walled shells have a very wide mouth and housing only about 1 to 2 whorls. The thread is sunken or missing. The housings are completely covered by the bent and fused to the top coat.

The translucent snails have an elongated body. The head shield bears no sensor, but may be present eyes. The foot is cut off or rounded off and has at the rear showy Parapodiallappen width, which are more or less bent upward.

The radula has no means large teeth and posterior teeth.

The family Philinidae include mainly small, nocturnal snails that feed as carnivores mainly of polychaetes and small shells.

Depending on the type, the screw can be about 1 to 4 years old, according to estimates. The snails are hermaphrodites that copulate each other with their penises. From the eggs hatch veliger larvae, which feed on plankton and metamorphose after several months to young snails.

The Philinidae include Seemandeln ( Philina ) with the chemical also found in the North Sea open Seemandel ( Philina aperta ).
