Philip C. Hayes

Philip Cornelius Hayes ( born February 3, 1833 in Granby, Connecticut, † July 13, 1916 in Joliet, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1877 and 1881 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Even in his youth, Philip Hayes moved with his father in LaSalle County, Illinois, where he attended the district schools. Then he studied until 1863 at Oberlin College in Ohio, among other theology. During the Civil War he served as an officer in the army of the Union, where he rose to 1865 to Brevet Brigadier General. In 1866, Hayes was school board in Mount Vernon. After several moves, he came in 1874, according to Morris, Illinois. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. In June 1872 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in part, was nominated to the President Ulysses S. Grant for re-election.

In the congressional elections of 1876 Hayes was in the seventh election district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Alexander Campbell on March 4, 1877. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1881 two legislative sessions. In 1882 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Philip Hayes moved to Joliet, where he died on 13 July 1916.
