Philip Delaporte

Philip Adam Delaporte was a born in Germany American Protestant missionary.

He was sent with his family in November 1899 on the Pacific island of Nauru; they came from Hawaii via Kusaie under the supervision of an American foreign affairs committee. Delaporte and his wife Salome translated various religious texts into Nauruan, such as the New Testament narratives of the Old Testament, a catechism, a hymn book, school texts and the history of the Christian Church.

Be published in 1907 Delaporte " pocket dictionary German - Nauruan " on which the Nauruan vocabulary is listed. It contained 65 pages with about 1650 words.

The missionary Boston office was taken over in 1917 by the London Missionary Association, and Delaporte returned with his family and with the young Timothy Detudamo back to the U.S., where he later died. Detudamo helped him further translating Nauruan texts.

Delaporte is seen on a postage stamp of Nauru.
