Philip H. Gilbert

Philip Henri Gilbert ( born October 25, 1870 in Napoleonville, Louisiana, † October 18, 1932 ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1926 and 1928 he was appointed acting lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana.

Career

Philip Gilbert attended both public and private schools. After a subsequent law degree from Tulane University and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. Between 1908 and 1916 he was district attorney in the 27th Judicial District of Louisiana. He subsequently served as a judge from 1916 to 1920. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. Between 1924 and 1932 he sat in the Senate of Louisiana, the President pro tempore, he was in 1926.

After the death of Governor Henry L. Fuqua its vice governor Oramel H. Simpson moved on to his successor. The vacant position of Deputy Governor was now the President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, Philip Gilbert, too. This held the position provisionally until the end of the term of office in 1928. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate official. He died on 18 October 1932 in his hometown of Napoleonville in Assumption Parish, where he was also buried.
