Philip II, Duke of Brunswick-Grubenhagen

Duke Philip II of Brunswick - Grubenhagen (* May 2, 1533, † April 4, 1596 ) was from 1595 to 1596 in the Principality of Prince Grubenhagen. With him died in 1596 the pit Hagen line of the Guelphs out.

Life

From the marriage of his father, Duke Philip I of Brunswick - Grubenhagen with Katherine von Mansfeld (1501-1535) many children were born. The later Philip II was the youngest of nine children, six of whom reached adulthood. After the Duke's death in 1551 he first succeeded by his son Ernst in the government. After his death in 1567 Philip's son Wolfgang. And he died in 1595 without male descendants followed Philip II

Philip II was with Clara of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel (* November 16, 1532, † November 23, 1595 ) married. 1560 moved into the couple's 1534 secularized monastery Katlenburg. They converted a part of the former monastery building into a Renaissance castle. They occupied the facility until 1595, which thereby became the pit hagen between secondary residence.

1595 Philip II moved his residence to the castle Herzberg. When he died childless after a short reign in 1596, thus ending the Welf branch line Grubenhagen. The Principality Grubenhagen was then occupied by Duke Heinrich Julius of Wolfenbüttel. The Lüneburg branch of the Guelph protested but to connecting to Wolfenbüttel in 1617 and got in front of the Imperial Chamber Court law. The son of Henry Julius, Duke Friedrich Ulrich, the mining heritage of Christian Hagen had the Elder, Prince of Lüneburg transferred.

His final resting place is located next to his parents and brothers in the crypt of St. Aegidienkirche in Osterode.
