Philip II, Landgrave of Hesse-Rheinfels

Philip II of Hessen- Rhein Rock, also known as Philip the Younger, ( born April 22, 1541 Marburg, † November 20, 1583 at Castle Rock Rhine ) was the first and only Landgrave of Hesse -Rhine rock.

Life

Philip was a son of the Landgrave Philipp I of Hesse from his marriage to Christine (1505-1549), daughter of Duke George of Saxony.

In 1552, the 11 -year-old Philip, had been attracted to girls clothes, was the envoy of King Henry II of France brought about as a hostage for the adherence of Hesse at the Treaty of Chambord to Basel. He spent considerable time then at the French court.

After the death of his father, Hesse was divided in Four Brothers comparison, so that Philipp 1567 first Landgrave of Hesse -Rhine rock was; his territory comprised about one-eighth of the previous Hessian territory. Wilhelm IV of Hesse -Kassel received with the lower county Katzenelenbogen the most part; George I of Hesse -Darmstadt received Scots, thorn rock and Homburg; and Ludwig IV of Hesse - Marburg got Lißberg, Ulrich Stein and the Itter.
