Philip J. Currie

Philip John Currie, called Phil, (born 13 March 1949 in Brampton, Ontario ) is a Canadian vertebrate paleontologist, with a research focus, which is on the dinosaurs. He is a professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Currie studied at the University of Toronto ( BA 1972 Zoology ), and McGill University, where in 1975 he took his master's degree and received his doctorate in 1981 in paleontology over synapsids and early Diapsiden Robert Lynn Carroll. In 1976 he became curator of the Provincial Museum of Alberta in Edmonton (later Royal Alberta Museum ). He was one of the founders of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, where he was curator of dinosaurs.

In the 1980s, he was director of a Canadian- Chinese joint project on dinosaur excavations in Mongolia with Dale Russell and Dong Zhiming. They also found dinosaur with clear spring characteristics ( Protarchaeopteryx, Caudipteryx ), which is one of curries preferred hypotheses on the origin of birds from dinosaurs substantiated and brought him into wider circles awareness. He also conducts research on the reconstruction of herd formation and migration behavior of dinosaurs.

In addition to excavations as in Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta, Canada, with fossils from the Cretaceous period, he carried out field research among other things, in Mongolia and Argentina.

Currie is married to Eva Paläobotanikerin Koppelhus ( with whom he also wrote several books ) and has three children from his first marriage. He wrote several popular science books and appeared in several television documentaries about dinosaurs.

He was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada in 1999. In 2010 he received the Alberta Order of Excellence.

He is currently (2011) president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.
