Philip Knights, Baron Knights

Philip Douglas Knights, Baron Knights CBE, QPM ( born October 3, 1920) is a British police officer retired and Life Peer.

Life and career

Knights attended a school in Grantham. 1937/1938, he joined as a police cadet in the Lincolnshire Police and Constable in 1940. During World War II he served from 1943 to 1945 in the Royal Air Force.

He returned to Lincolnshire and reached in 1957 the rank of Chief Superintendent. In 1959, he moved to Birmingham City Police as Assistant Chief Constable. From 1963 to 1966 he was Deputy Commandant of the Police Staff College. He was Deputy Chief Constable in 1970. In 1972 he moved to Sheffield and Rotherham Constabulary Chief Constable, 1974, he was this for the South Yorkshire Police from 1975 to 1985 he was Chief Constable of West Midlands Police.

In 1983, he was criticized for officers of the West Midlands Special Branch do not have to disciplined, who investigated the case of the CND activist Madeline Haigh.

From 1978 to 1979 Knights was President of ACPO. He served on the Board of Directors ( Council) Aston University from 1985 to 1998 and the Committee Warks CCC from 1985 to 1989. Membership in the House of Lords

Knights was appointed on 22 July 1987 Life peer as Baron Knights of Edgbaston in the County of West Midlands. In the House of Lords he sits as a cross Bencher. His inaugural address was delivered on 20 April 1988.

As subjects of political interest he calls on the website of the House law and order, police, city centers and local administration.

In the late 1990s he took part in occasional meeting days. In the following years, however, this fell sharply. In later years he was absent.

Honors

He was honored in 1964 with the QPM. Knights Knight Bachelor in 1980. In 1971 he became a member of the Order of the British Empire ( OBE) in 1976 and Commander ( CBE). Knights 1977 Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.

In 1985 he became Deputy Lieutenant (DL ) of West Midlands. The Aston University honored him in 1996 with the awarding of an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Science ( Hon DSc ).
