Philip S. Lee

Philip S. Lee, CM, OM ( born May 5, 1944 in Hong Kong, Chinese李绍麟) is a Canadian chemist. Since 2009 he is the incumbent Vice Governor of the Province of Manitoba and as such represents the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, at the provincial level.

Biography

Lee emigrated to Canada in 1962 to complete at the University of Manitoba to study chemistry. In 1967 he was hired by the city council of the provincial capital Winnipeg as a research chemist and took in the following years studies in the fields of water supply and water quality. Later he rose to become chief chemist of urban control authority for industrial wastewater.

In addition to his professional activities, he held until his retirement in 2005, Lee played in the 1970s a significant role in the community of Chinese immigrants, and promoted as a member or chairman of many organizations, the cultural and economic exchange. As a candidate of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba in 1977, he ran unsuccessfully for election to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. After that, he was until 1981 a member of the Human Rights Commission of the province.

For his contributions to the integration of Chinese immigrants Lee has received several awards, including the Order of Canada in 2002 and 2009, the Order of Manitoba. Governor General Michaëlle Jean sworn him on August 4, 2009 as the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba.
