Philipp Blom

Philipp Blom (born 1970 in Hamburg) is a German writer, historian, journalist and translator.

Life

Philipp Blom studied in Vienna and Oxford and a doctorate in Oxford with a thesis on the Nietzsche reception and the race thinking in the cultural Zionism.

Blom has subsequently worked in London and Paris and now lives in Vienna.

He writes in English and German. His historical works dealing with the history of ideas and the history of mentalities: Collective wonder Sammelwahn is a history of collective culture since the Renaissance; The Prudential monster: Diderot, d' Alembert, de Jaucourt and the Great Encyclopedia referenced not only the history of a central event of the Enlightenment, but also the personal and intellectual conflicts between the Enlightenment itself in his book The Vertigo Years: Change and Culture in the West 1900-1914 ( German 2009. tumbling the continent of Europe from 1900 to 1914 ) Blom deals with the social, cultural and intellectual upheavals at the beginning of the twentieth century. His novels The Simmons Papers and Luxor are attributable to the genre of philosophical fable. In 2000 he also published a nonfiction book about Austrian wines ( The Wines of Austria).

A journalist Blom has been published ( The Time, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Der Standard) in newspapers and magazines in the UK (The Guardian, The Independent, Financial Times, Times Literary Supplement ) and in the German-speaking countries. In the Austrian culture channel OE1 Blom moderated the discussion program regularly from day to day.
