Philipp Forchheimer

Philipp Forchheimer ( born August 7, 1852 in Vienna, † October 2, 1933 in Dürnstein, Lower Austria ) was an Austrian hydrologist and engineer. He was a pioneer in the field of civil engineering and practical hydraulics and professor in Istanbul, Aachen and Graz.

He led the mathematical methodology in the hydraulic and presented this order on a scientific basis. In particular, he turned to the Laplace equation on the calculations of the ground - water flow and so headed fountain formulas forth. In the Forchheimer equation, he expanded the Darcy 's equation for groundwater flow around a turbulence term.

At the Technical University of Graz, he was rector until 1897. Besides his teaching, he worked as a consultant of construction projects. He made proposals for the construction of a tunnel under the English Channel.

In 1933 in Vienna Liesing ( 23rd district ) was named the Forchheimer alley after him.
