Philipp Stöhr

Philipp Stöhr the Elder ( born June 13, 1849 in Würzburg, † November 4, 1911 ) was a German anatomist and professor.

Life

The son of a wine merchant and innkeeper studied medicine at the Julius- Maximilians- University of Würzburg, and in 1869 member of the Corps Bavaria Würzburg. In 1873 he received his doctorate. He trained at the anatomical institutes of the universities of Leipzig, Breslau and Greifswald on. In 1877 he became prosector of anatomy, histology and embryology in Würzburg. In 1879 he was habilitated in 1882 Head of the Department of Pathology Anatomy and an associate professor in 1884. From 1882 he was a member of the Leopoldina. In 1889 he became a full professor of anatomy at the University of Zurich.

As Professor 1897-1911 Stöhr established a leading scientific school of Histology and Embryology in Würzburg. Stöhr wrote the first useful for medical students Textbook of Histology, which went through fifteen editions until 1912 and continued to 1969 ( 30th edition ).

His nephew Philipp Stöhr the Younger was in Bonn also professor of anatomy.
