Philippe Buc

Philippe Buc ( born 1961 in Paris ) is a French historian.

Philippe Buc attended until 1977 École Active Bilingue high school in Paris and passed the Math and Science High School. From 1978 to June 1981, he completed his Undergraduate studies at Swarthmore College and graduated with the Bachelor of Arts in History. From 1981 to 1983 he studied medieval history at the University of Paris I Sorbonne. From 1983 to 1984 he completed his military service as an assistant in history and geography at the French Naval Academy. From 1984 to 1989 studied Buc history at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. From 1985 to June 1987, he completed a graduate program in Mittalterlicher history at the University of California. In 1988, the Master in History. Buc doctorate in history with the dissertation Potestas: prince, pouvoir et peuple dans les commentaires de la Bible (Paris et du Nord France, 1100-1330 ). Buc taught as an Assistant Professor in Medieval History (1990 to 1997), as an Associate Professor in Medieval History (1997 to 2003) and as a professor in Medieval History (2003 to 2011) at Stanford University. In 2004 he was a visiting professor at the University of Heidelberg. Since September 2011, he has been Professor of the History of the High and Late Middle Ages at the University of Vienna.

His research interests include religion and politics, between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the religious violence ( terrorism, holy war and martyrdom ) in the European Middle Ages, the Bible exegesis and politics, the medieval historiography and history as well as revolutions (eg the Pataria, and the Hussites ).
