Philippe de Villiers

Philippe de Villiers (born 25 March 1949 in Boulogne ( Vendée) as Viscount Philippe le Jolis de Villiers de Saintignon ) is a French politician, member of the European Parliament and publicist.

He was from 1987 to 1994 and from 1997 to 2004 member of the French National Assembly. From 1994 to 1999 and again since 2004, he was a member of the European Parliament. From 1988 to 2010 he was President of the General Council of the department of Vendée.

He leads the party Mouvement pour la France (MPF, "Movement for France "), which was successful in elections to the European Parliament in 1994, 1999 and 2004. The MPF is a Christian democratic and conservative party and advocates a largely independent France, which emits no sovereignty to the European Union.

With his book Les Mosquées de Roissy ( " The Mosques of Roissy " ) over alleged networks of Islamic fundamentalists in the baggage handling area of the Parisian airport Villiers made headlines in 2006.

Villiers entered as 1995 in 2007 already in the French presidential elections. Main themes of his campaign was the fight against the European Union and the strong euro, its call for a ban on immigration and his warning of a possible Islamization of France. In addition, Villiers was based on his political balance sheet as President of the General Council of the department of Vendée. In the political spectrum Villiers tried to occupy the space between the conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy and far-right Jean -Marie Le Pen. In the presidential elections of 1995 he had the five-percent hurdle narrowly missed, the right to reimbursement of election expenses. He then had to launch a public appeal for donations. In 2007, he came only to some 2.2 % of the vote.

In February 2009, Villiers announced its membership in the newly established pan-European organization Libertas, which rejects the Treaty of Lisbon. Through membership Villiers ' Libertas fulfilled the necessary criteria to be recognized as a European political party. In the European elections in France 2009 Villiers was ever chosen as the only Libertas candidate in the European Parliament.

On 31 October 2010 he resigned from his position as President of the General Council of Vendée back.
