Philippe Desportes

Philippe Desportes (* 1546 in Chartres, † October 5, 1606 in Bonport, Normandy ) was a French abbot and poet.

As a poet he has rendered special services to the purity of the language, and rigor of the metrical forms and may be viewed as precursors François de Malherbe. He is counted in French literature on the second generation of the La Pléiade. He was Poet Laureate of Henry III. in the house of Valois, and of Henry IV His sonnets, odes, elegies, songs and try to emulate his heroes Francesco Petrarch, Ludovico Ariosto, and Jacopo Sannazaro. Besides his poems, he has published in 1603 a translation of the Psalms, and a collection of " Prières et méditations chrétiennes " in prose. He died as abbot of Bonport (Normandy) in the Abbey Bonport.

Desportes was also the uncle of the famous poet Mathurin Régnier, the son of his sister Simone Desportes.
