Philippe Gaubert

Philippe Gaubert ( born July 4, 1879 in Cahors, † July 8, 1941 in Paris) was a French composer and flautist.

Life

Gaubert studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was inter alia Student of the flute teacher Paul Taffanel, together with the Méthode complète he the textbook de flute written about 1900. In 1894 he was awarded the Premier Prix of the Conservatoire. Since 1897, he played as a solo flutist at the Paris Opéra. In 1905 he won second prize in the prestigious Prix de Rome ( Rome Prize ). After war service (including at Verdun ) Gaubert received in 1919 a professorship at the Paris Conservatoire. He was a teacher of Marcel Moyse, the father of the modern flute school, who in turn taught many important flutists Aurèle Nicolet about, Jean Pierre Rampal and James Galway. He was also active as a conductor of the Paris Opéra, 1931, whose artistic director. His numerous works of literature dedicated flute, for example, the fourth set of Joueurs de Flute by Albert Roussel.

His compositional work is stylistically influenced by Gabriel Fauré.
