Philippe Mouskes

Philippe Mouskes, also Mouskés or Mousket ( * before 1220, † February 24, 1282 ) was a Bishop of Tournai and author of a rhymed chronicle. He was born in Ghent and was around the year 1242 canon and chancellor of the church in Tournai. In 1272 he was elected bishop, which office he held until his death.

Life

Around the year 1245 Mouskes began writing his rhyming chronicle, which he wrote in Old French. In 31,150 verses, he tells the story of the Franks from its mythological beginnings in Troy and leads them to the reign of Louis IX. of the Holy continued into the year 1242. However, the main focus of his story is on the history of Charlemagne. The historical veracity of his story is considered rather low, the events are legend reproduced by way of exaggerated especially since with him.
