Philippe Riboud

Philippe Riboud ( born April 9, 1957 in Lyon ) is a former French epee fencer. He won six medals at the Olympic Games.

Riboud took already at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal at the epee competitions, left there but with the team in the second round, in single, he finished 37th In the World Fencing Championships 1978 Riboud took second place behind the Olympic champion from 1976 Alexander Pusch. The following year, Riboud won his first world title in front of the Hungarian Ernő Kolczonay.

At the Olympic Games in 1980 Riboud won in the final round against Kolczonay, but was subject to the Swedes Rolf Edling and Johan Harm mountain at the end won Harm mountain gold before Kolczonay and Riboud. With the French epee team Riboud won the final against Poland and won his first Olympic gold medal. After France remained without a medal at the World Fencing Championship in 1981 at the local Clermont -Ferrand, the French were in fact successful in the World Fencing Championships 1982 in Rome. Riboud won silver in the individual competition behind the Hungarian Jenő Papp, in the team competition won Olivier Lenglet, Philippe Riboud, Philippe Boisse and Michel Salesse front of the Swiss team. In the World Fencing Championships 1983 Boisse, Lenglet, Salesse defended the title with Jean- Michel Henry, but without Riboud. A year later, at the 1984 Olympic Games were all five of the French team, the silver behind the German team won after had won in individual competition Boisse gold and bronze Riboud.

At the World Championships in 1985 and 1986, the French epee team remained without a medal in individual Riboud won the 1985 bronze and 1986 his second world title. 1987 remained the French in the individual competition without a medal, but got in the team competition bronze for Boisse, Henry, Riboud and Éric Srecki. At the 1988 Olympic Games Riboud was the solo contest best Frenchman in the final he lost to the German Arnd Schmitt with 9 to 10 hits. In the finals of the team competition, the French defeated the German team, with the only Riboud lost his battles.

His last major medal winning Philippe Riboud at the World Fencing Championship in 1990 in his hometown of Lyon, the French team with Henry, Lenglet, Riboud and Srecki received the silver medal behind the Italians.
