Philips Wouwerman

Philips Wouwerman ( baptized May 24, 1619 in Haarlem, buried May 23, 1668 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Haarlem ) was a Dutch Baroque painter.

Life and work

Philips was the eldest son of the history painter Pauwels ( Paul) Joosten Wouwerman. His two brothers Pieter (1623-1682) and Jan (Johannes ) ( 1629-1666 ), also exerted the painter's craft, in which Jan predominantly painted landscapes. To 1638/39 Philips Wouwerman allegedly spent some weeks in Hamburg. Here he married Annetje Pietersz. van Broeckhof.

The Haarlem painters Philips Wouwerman was one of the most versatile and prolific painters of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. His paintings were already in great demand during his lifetime, but especially in the 18th century, throughout Europe. Testify today Wouwerman extensive collections of paintings of the former princely art collections, for example, in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg or in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.

Little is known about the training Philips Wouwermans known: Cornelis de Bie, according to it should be gone in Frans Hals ( 1580/85-1666 ) in the doctrine, but whose painting style has left no traces in his work. Wouwerman appears to be from a short stay in Hamburg, even traveled abroad. He lived until his death in 1668 in Haarlem, where he in 1640 was a member of the Guild of St. Luke, and in this institution took over multiple administrative tasks. Early on, he married Anna Pietersz. van Broeckhoff (d. 1670 ), with whom he had ten children, seven of whom survived and 1670 - after the death of his mother - competed his not inconsiderable inheritance. As a respected member of the Haarlem Society of Artists also worked as a real estate dealer. Most written references about his person in the Haarlem archives relating to this activity.

Immersed in the artistic environment and the variety of picturesque traditions of his hometown Haarlem Philips Wouwerman began his artistic career in 1639 with simple scenes in the tradition of Pieter van Laer Bamboccianti one ( 1592/99 - after 1642). In his battle scenes Wouwerman handle especially in representations of the riders battle the suggestions van Laers grateful to. With its Italianate soldiers pieces Wouwerman was the dominant battle-painter of the second half of the 17th century. During his almost thirty years of creative life he early developed an individual style with very wide thematic spectrum, stretching from genre and landscape scenes on military to religious subjects. Rightly he is still ever regarded as one of the best horse painter whose detailed and vivid reproduction of horses of all breeds quickly became legendary.

But more should his achievements in the field of landscape and genre painting not be forgotten. His finely painted works with its delicate, subdued colors, stunning details, often combined with darstellerischem joke, are true treasures that have been searched and highly paid in the 18th and even the 19th century by collectors throughout Europe. Although Philips Wouwerman has since been somewhat neglected, its technically and thematically outstanding works are still very much in demand on the art market today.

The number of Wouwermans authentic works is estimated at about 570, of which approximately half are located in each case in public and private collections. Many of his paintings are now attributed formerly attributed to his very numerous followers and copyists. Among the most significant artists working in Wouwermans style, include Jan van Huchtenburgh (1647-1738), the brothers Jan Frans (1683-1750) and Joseph van Bredael (1688-1739) and Carel van Falens ( 1683-1733 ). Often, his two younger brothers Pieter and Jan Wouwerman be named as imitators of their more important brother. The oeuvre of Pieter Wouwerman (1623-1682) has, in fact, clearly its influence especially in terms of subject matter, while stylistically a quite own handwriting can be observed. January Wouwerman (1629-1666), however, was an independent in both stylistic and thematic contexts landscape painter.

A first monographic exhibition devoted Philips Wouwerman the Museum Hessen Kassel Wilhelmshöhe Palace and the Mauritshuis, The Hague, in the years 2009 /2010.
