Philipsdam

The Philipsdam is part of the Delta Works. It separates the waters Krammer and Volkerak of the Oosterschelde and runs between the Grevelingendam and the Sint- Philips country.

In 1976 started the construction of an artificial island on the Plaat van Vliet. Then the Krammerschleusen were built for the inland waterways.

These were completed in 1983 and released on February 2, 1987, after completion of the dike construction work for the traffic. In 1994 was a lock for the recreational boating built.

The locks work with a water exchange system which prevents salt water from the Oosterschelde flows into the Volkerak. In this case, the heavier salt water is sucked from the bottom or the fresh water from the top, depending on the direction of the ships. The locks are 280 feet long and 24 feet wide, and therefore suitable for large thrust associations.
