Phillip Hagar Smith

Phillip Hagar Smith ( born April 29, 1905 in Lexington, Massachusetts, † August 29 1987 in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey ) was an American engineer. He became known for his invention of the eponymous Smith chart, a system for graphical representation of computations in the complex AC circuit analysis.

After completing his studies at Tufts College in 1928, Smith worked for Radio Corporation of America (RCA) of antennas and RF cables. For these applications, he invented in 1937, the Smith chart. During World War II he worked on radar equipment. He later moved to Bell Laboratories, where he worked until his retirement in 1970.

Smith was a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE ) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE ), which in 1956 named him a Fellow since 1947.
