Phlegmatized

Phlagmatizing is a technique for reducing the sensitivity of explosive explosives (eg, PETN, RDX ) to shock and friction.

In chemistry means " desensitized " usually means that a ( powder ) material with liquid is coated. Substances present in powder form, are often highly reactive and tend to explosively oxidize. To make handling, transport and storage of such substances harmless, they are desensitized. Thus, the individual particles are surrounded by the thin liquid layers, and therefore are less reactive.

Examples are:

  • The desensitization of aluminum powder with linseed oil. It can thus only very difficult to ignite by itself in the air. However, his violent reaction with iron ( III ) oxide remains ( thermite).
  • The cover of phosphorus with petroleum. Thus it is completed by the oxygen in the air, and there is no spontaneous combustion instead.
  • The desensitization of picric acid with wax.
  • The desensitization of acetone peroxide with acetone.
  • The desensitization of ammonium dichromate with water.
