As letter choice (. Word also DID number or vanity number of engl vanity: Vanity) is called a method to represent phone numbers by sequences of letters. On many phone keypads the numeric keys are also assigned letters from the Latin alphabet. If these letters instead of digits used to display numbers, phone numbers can be represented as catchy terms. Umlauts are thereby formed of two characters: the output vowel and the letter E.
Word choice numbers are used in the USA for service numbers for several decades on a broad basis. Therefore are or were also indicated on dial telephones letters. In Germany they have not been enforced.
Vanity numbers in Germany
In Germany, a vanity number for value-added service numbers - Service services ( 0180), Personal Numbers ( 0700), fee -free telephone services ( 0800) and premium services ( 0900) - will be requested from the Federal Network Agency ( FNA ). " Since the Federal Network Agency [ principle ] does not assign names, but numbers have [ ... applicant ] to implement on your request the desired name / term [ himself ] to the corresponding digit combination. " Whether the sequence of digits of a requested number could give a specific name / term (! ) or possibly what, the Federal Network Agency not checked.
The first six, seven or eight letters of a ( desired ) name / term result from alphanumeric implementation, a vanity number, the length ( number of digits after the service code ) is determined by the type of number. For the number of spaces of value-added services the following rules, from how much a numeric vanity number can be formed are:
- Numbering 0180: A vanity number can consist of six ( without identification of the tariff ) or seven ( with tariff code ) digits are formed (0180 -x - 0180- nnnnnn or nnnnnnn )
- Numbering 0700: A vanity number can be made up of eight digits ( 0700 - nnnnnnnn )
- Numbering 0800: A vanity number can be formed from seven digits ( 0800 nnnnnnn )
- Numbering 0900: A vanity number can be made up of six digits ( 0900- nnnnnn )
