Phosphorus pentabromide is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of bromides.
Production and representation
Phosphorus pentabromide can be obtained by reaction of phosphorus (III ) bromide with bromine.
Properties
Phosphorus pentabromide is a yellow solid with a pungent odor. He is extremely hygroscopic, heat-and heat-sensitive and has a corrosive effect. Like the homologous phosphorus pentachloride and phosphorus pentafluoride it has a pentagonal- bipyramidal structure. Above 35 ° C, it decomposes to phosphorus (III) bromide, and bromine. In contrast to phosphorus pentachloride and phosphorus pentafluoride is formed with metal complexes no Bromokomplexe PBr6, but is to phosphorus (III ) bromide and Br reduced.
With it forms ammonium phosphorus nitride dibromide.
