Phra Pathommachedi

The Phra Pathom Chedi ( Thai: พระ ปฐม เจดีย ) is 127 m, the highest Buddhist Chedi world. The chedi is in the city of Nakhon Pathom in Thailand.

History

Phra Pathom Chedi The name means Holy chedi of the beginning. The first written record of this Chedi to the year 675, but interpret archaeological excavations indicate that in the 4th century a first chedi was built.

After the conquest of the country by the Khmer chedi was built over with a Prang, which was later covered by jungle. The ruins were rediscovered in the 19th century, when the future King Mongkut (Rama IV ) grazed during his time as a monk in the woods Nakhon Pathoms. After his coronation, he ordered to build a new and particularly important Buddhist site here. After 17 years of construction, the building in 1870 under his successor, King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ) was completed. Chulalongkorn left the building later on also drag with fine Chinese bricks. The Thai Phra Pathom Chedi Ministry of Culture has been proposed as a future World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Attractions

  • Phra Ruang Rojanaridhi - King Vajiravudh (. Rama VI ) took place in 1909, when he was still crown prince, in Si Satchanalai fragments of a large Buddha statue, only the head, hands and feet were intact from the. King Vajiravudh gave her the name of Phra Ruang Rojanaridhi Sri Maha Indarathita Dharmobas Vajiravudha Rajapujaniya Borpitra. Later the remains of the king were buried in the base of the statue. Today Phra Ruang Rojanaridhi is in the Abhaya mudra hand position ( Schutzverheissung ) widely visible at the top of the great northern staircase.
  • Phra Phuttha Narachet - the seated Buddha statue " white stone " in the Dvaravati style located on the stairs leading to the southern entrance. She is from head to foot 3.76 m high, sitting in the European style with the hand position of the instruction ( Vitarka mudra). Another similar looking statue is located in Wat Na Phra Men in today's historical park Ayutthaya, a third is in the National Museum Bangkok.
  • A model of the original chedi, similar to a bell-shaped base of the Stupa of Sanchi and a Khmer prang stands today next to the southern entrance to the Chedi.
  • Outside the Phra Rabieng, the circular gallery, which surrounds the Chedi, small niches are attached at regular intervals. Herein are 40 Buddha statues, which were prepared according to a list of the abbot of Wat Pho Prince Paramanuchit Chinorot. The list includes Buddha statues in the 40 standard poses of Thai iconography.
