Phrenic nerve pacing

The lung is an electrical stimulation device with which the respiratory muscles or the Phrenicusnerven can be electrically stimulated. Divers describe electronically controlled circuit breathing apparatus also as electric lungs.

Application

Two -scale by means of belts electrodes ( between dome of diaphragm and lower rib cage and between the costal arch and upper hip edge ) produce a slight electrical stimulation, which supports the contraction of the diaphragm during operation of the electric lungs during inhalation. During exhalation, the abdominal and low back muscles are excited by the stimulus current in the second electrode. Their contraction causes a high pressure from the abdominal contents and an increasing relaxation of the diaphragm.

Areas of application

  • Weakness ( up to paralysis ) of the diaphragm muscle.
  • Diving (see History of diving )
