Phthisis bulbi (Latin for " Augapfelschrumpfung " ) is the medical term for the shrinkage and atrophy of the eyeball, usually due to recurrent inflammation of the eye or severe trauma. The most common pathogenic mechanism is an atrophy of the ciliary body. The produced water dries up there chamber, causing the bulb to shrink and by a lack of food atrophy important structures the eye. Bulbi phthisis may also be congenital.
