Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum

The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum ( Thai พิพิธภัณฑ์ ไดโนเสาร์ ภูเวียง ) is a geological museum, which mainly exhibits fossils. It is administered by the department of mineral deposits in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Location

The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum is located in Amphoe Wiang Kao, Khon Kaen Province in the northeast region of Thailand, the so-called Isaan. It about 87 km west of the provincial capital. The site has an area of ​​approximately 16 ha

Exhibition

The museum consists of an open-air facility and four buildings that are connected by footpaths, the so-called type 1, 2, 3 and 9 buildings protect the fossils from damage caused by environmental and visitors.

The museum is open daily except Mondays from 9 bis 17 clock clock.

History

In 1976, the first dinosaur discovery was made on Thai soil in the area of Phu Wiang. First, they were digging for minerals since 1970 and found coffinite, a uranium ore, with copper ores, azurite and malachite. 1976 discovered the geologist Sutham Yaemniyom a bone, which was later identified as part of a femur of a sauropod. The excavations were vigorously pursued and found many other pieces, such as bones, teeth and traces of dinosaurs from before about 130 million years ago.
