Phuket (city)

Province

Phuket is the capital of both the province of Phuket, as well as of the district of Phuket. Phuket Town is situated in the southeast of Phuket Island, the distance to the capital Bangkok is more than 850 kilometers. In English usage, the city is officially called Phuket City since 13 February 2004, before it was called Phuket Town.

Cityscape

Phuket Town has a typical silhouette. On the one hand there is considerable evidence on the Portuguese colonial architecture to see, even if the country and thus the city were never colonial territory. On the other hand, the population was always for the most part from the Chinese. This is also clearly seen on a walk through the city. There are numerous Chinese shrines and temples, and every year is celebrated here "Vegetarian Festival ", a religious festival of Chinese origin.

In recent years, the importance of the city has been urged by the influx of western tourists in the background. The tourists prefer to hold on to the various beaches of the island, located along the west coast.

From the rank - Hill ( Khao Rang ) has a wonderful view over the city and part of the island.
