Phycitinae

Indian meal moth ( Plodia interpunctella )

The Phyticinae are a large subfamily of the European corn borer ( Pyralidae ) within the order of butterflies. Worldwide, about 4000 species in about 600 genera are counted among this group. The great majority of species have their distribution in tropical and subtropical regions, while in central Europe, only about 120 species are endemic.

Features

The Phyticinae are usually smaller representatives of the European corn borer ( Pyralidae ) with tightly folded wings. You are probably a monophyletic group, because certain features of the caterpillars are found only in this group.

Way of life

Among the representatives of the Phycitinae there next to the "usual" ways of life ( leaf and seed eaters, leafrollers ) also specialists that insects, especially aphids eat plants, or plant galls inhabit.

System

In the subfamily Phyticinae usually also the formerly valid subfamilies Anerastiinae and Peoriinae to be calculated. 58 genera and nearly 120 species are known from Central Europe.
