Piano Concerto No. 5 (Prokofiev)

Sergei Prokofiev composed his Piano Concerto No. 5 in G Major, opus 55 end 1931st The premiere took place on 31 October 1932 in Berlin with the Berlin Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler. As a soloist, the composer himself played, as in almost all world premieres of his concerts.

After he had completed his 4th Piano Concerto, a work commissioned for the left hand and orchestra, which was rejected by his client, Paul Wittgenstein, he decided to write a new piano concerto, again for two hands and orchestra. With its five sets, the concert does not correspond to the classic three - or four-movement concerto form, which is why the composer originally intended to describe the work as music for piano and orchestra. Prokofiev's good friend Myaskovsky convinced him to denote the composition as a piano concerto.

The three set designations are as follows:

First Set

Prokofiev's musical goal was after he had composed especially atonal and revolutionary in his middle period, to come back to a simple to understand music. After his return to the Soviet Union, he wanted to write for the people to understand music. Whether the execution of its simple design it has succeeded is questionable. What is also here, as in almost all the works of Prokofiev is the case, the importance assumed by the rhythm in his music. As especially in the third piano concerto is based, the effect of this concert on the rhythmic vitality it radiates. In contrast to the third piano concerto prevails here, however, a rather untypical for Prokofiev lack of emotion and lyricism.
