Piano Man is the second album by the American singer Billy Joel. It was released in November 1973, after the failure of Joel's debut album, Cold Spring Harbor, his first great success. The theme song Piano Man Billy Joel is one of the most famous songs to date and gave the artist also his nickname. Piano Man was Joel's first release with Columbia Records after disputes could be settled because of his contract with his previous production company Family Productions.

Formation

The work has significant musical influences of the previously released album Tumbleweed Connection in Elton John and country themes in almost all titles. Lyrically, the influences, especially in The Ballad of Billy the Kid, a ballad about the outlaws Billy the Kid, and musically in the songs of Captain Jack, Travelin ' Prayer or stop in Nevada clearly. These pieces all use pentatonic scales, a typical feature in country music.

Publication

The album was released in the U.S. in November 1973. The song Piano Man reaching number 25 of the U.S. Billboard charts. The other extractions Travelin ' Prayer and Worse Comes to Worst occupied positions 77 and 80 in the singles charts, the album itself reached the 27th place in the pop album charts. A cover version of Travelin ' Prayer brought Dolly Parton 1999 Grammy nomination.
