Piano Trio No. 2 (Mendelssohn)

Felix Mendelssohn composed his second piano trio in C minor, Op 66 (MWV Q 33) in Frankfurt. The imaginary as a birthday gift for his sister Fanny Piano Trio ( in the cast piano, violin and cello) was completed on 30 April 1845. The premiere it passed on 20 December 1845 in Leipzig, and appeared in 1846 with a dedication to Louis Spohr from the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel in pressure.

The work is in four movements, the performance time is approximately less than 30 minutes.

The dramatic and powerful first movement (Allegro con fuoco e energico, 4/4 ) follows the sonata form, which are presented in the extended exposure 3 topics. The second movement (Andante espressivo, 9/ 8) reminded his to contrasting gentle mood on some of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words.

The Scherzo ( Molto Allegro quasi presto, 2/4 ) is a rondo and evokes a Midsummer Night's Dream reminiscent of the Elfenspuk the music mood. Mendelssohn's note to his trio, it was " a bit to play disgusting ", possibly referring to this short but virtuoso set.

The finale (Allegro appassionato, 6/ 8) is initiated by a cello theme with an unusual jump for Mendelssohn None. The set forms a three thematic Rondo, emerge in the imitative and contrapuntal techniques. The third theme is a freely composed chorale, which alludes to the beginning to the tune of Blessed are You, Jesus Christ ( chorales also use Mendelssohn under the preceding opus number 65, published six organ sonatas ).
