Reconstruction of the skull of Piatnitzkysaurus

  • Piatnitzkysaurus Floresi Bonaparte, 1979

Piatnitzkysaurus is a genus theropod dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic ( Callovian ) of South America.

Previously, parts were associated with skeletal remains found two skulls partially preserved in the Cañadon Asphalt Formation of the Argentine province of Chubut. Paleontologists are still debating how it should be classified. Anatomically, it seems almost stand Allosaurus, although the base of the skull shows differences.

Piatnitzkysaurus was named after Alejandro Piatnitzky and Miguel Flores, two Argentine geologists. A replica of the skeleton of this theropod is exhibited at the Museum of Natural Sciences " Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia ", Buenos Aires.
