Piatra-Olt

Piatra Olt is a town in Olt County in Lesser Wallachia in Romania.

Location

Piatra Olt is located in the west of the Wallachian plain on the right bank of the river Olt. The district capital Slatina is located about 10 km northeast.

History

Archaeological investigations have shown that the region of the city has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Romanian historians see in eingemeindeten village Enoseşti the location of the Roman settlement and fort Acidava.

Piatra Olt was first mentioned in 1529 as a possession of the monastery Tismana documented that today is my finished ( and split ) Village Criva already 1519.

The up to now predominantly rural place boomed through the 1870s were made in the construction of the railway from Bucharest westward up to the time running at Orşova Hungarian-Romanian border. Due to the little time later was commissioning the route of Corabia an der Donau to Râmnicu Vâlcea the Carpathians Piatra Olt was an important railway hub in southern Romania.

1989 Piatra Olt was declared a city.

The main industries of the city are agriculture, textile and metal industries as well as activities associated with the railway.

Population

1930 lived on the territory of today's approximately 4,200 residents. As of the 2002 census, 6,347 inhabitants were counted in the city, including 5,749 Romanians and 597 Roma. Approximately 2,200 lived in Piatra Olt itself, the other in the five incorporated villages.

Traffic

On Piatra Olt next station stop local trains and express trains. There are good train connections to many major cities in the country, including Bucharest, Craiova and Sibiu. The town is located on the National Road 64 from Caracal after Râmnicu Vâlcea.
