Piatt County, Illinois

The Piatt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 16,729 inhabitants and a population density of 14.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Monticello.

Geography

The County is located in east-central Illinois, about 70 miles from the geographic center of the state. It has an area of 1140 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface.

From northeast to southwest, the county is drained by the Sangamon River, a left tributary of the Illinois River.

History

The Piatt County was formed on January 20, 1841 from the southeastern part of the DeWitt County and the northeastern part of the Macon County. It was named after Benjamin Piatt, a pioneer, lawyer and Attorney General of the Territory of Illinois 1810-1813.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Piatt County 16,729 people in 6507 households. The population density was 14.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 6507 households lived statistically 2.54 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 97.9 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.2 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

23.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.7 percent were 65 years or older. 50.4 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 58,837. The per capita income was $ 27,452. 6.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
