The Piazza dei Miracoli is a green area near the fortress in the north-western part of the old town. The remote location on the outskirts of the historical town center is unusual. In the square stands the famous ensemble, consisting of the baptistery, the largest baptistery in the world, the cemetery Monumental Cemetery and the cross-shaped cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its bell tower, the Leaning Tower. They are among the masterpieces of medieval architecture and had a great influence on monumental art in Italy from the 11th to the 14th century.
