Piazza Pretoria

Piazza Pretoria is a place in Palermo, capital of Sicily. It is located in the center of the old town just south of the Quattro Canti at Via Maqueda and extends from the latter towards the east. A wide staircase leads down from the square to Via Maqueda. His name has the place of the Praetorian Palace the former court palace in Palermo.

Piazza Pretoria was established in the 16th century to build the Mannerist Fontana Pretoria there. In the vernacular, the Piazza Pretoria was because of the nude statues of this well then the name Piazza della Vergogna ( place of shame ). This designation is in Palermo still in use.

On the eastern side of the Piazza Pretoria across the street is the Dominican church of Santa Caterina, in the south is the place of the Praetorian Palace, the City Hall Palermo, completed.
