Picea alcoquiana

Alcock Spruce

The Alcock Spruce ( Picea alcoquiana ) is a flowering plant in the genus spruce (Picea ) within the family (Pinaceae ). It is native to Japan on the island of Honshu. Since it is inhabited only a small area of no economic significance. In Central Europe, the tree is rarely planted.

Description

The Alcock Spruce is an evergreen tree, the plant height to about 35 meters reached. The needles are 1-2 cm long, densely standing and quite stiff.

Picea alcoquiana is monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). The male cones are 10-15 mm long and contain many stamens; they are initially red and yellow later. The ovoid - cylindrical female cones are purple during flowering. The mature cones are reddish to light brown, have a length of usually 7-9 ( 5-12 ) cm and a diameter of usually 3 ( 2.5 to 5.5 ) cm when they have opened. The seeds are including their brown wings 7-10 mm long, 4-5 mm wide.

The species of fir (Abies ) was Picea alcoquiana temporarily assigned.
