Picea meyeri is a species in the family (Pinaceae ). It is native to northern China.

Description

Picea meyeri grows as a evergreen tree that can reach the stature heights of up to 30 meters and diameter at breast height of up to 60 centimeters. The crown is cone shaped. The gray -brown bark peels off in irregular-shaped plates. The hairy or hairless bark of the branches is yellow-brown.

The slightly resinous, brown winter buds are conical to conical - ovoid. The slightly curved needles are linear - square shaped with a length of 1.3 to 3 inches and a width of approximately 0.2 inches. Your tip is blunt or nearly pointed, but not pungent. It is found on all sides Stomatalinien needle.

Picea meyeri is monoecious - getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ) and the flowering period is in April. The pins are elongated cylindrical shape with a length of 6 to 9 centimeters, and a thickness of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. They are initially green and change color to mature from September to October through yellow-brown. The seed scales are obovate and are about 1.6 inches long and 1.2 inches wide. The inverted egg-shaped seeds are about 3.5 millimeters long and have a wing which is about 10 millimeters long.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Picea meyeri is located in the north of China. It includes the there located in Shanxi Province, Wutai Shan and the provinces of Hebei, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia. Whether there are also deposits in southern Gansu is questionable.

Picea meyeri thrives at altitudes from 1600 to 2700 meters.

Picea meyeri is classified as " not at risk " in the IUCN Red List. It is noted, however, that a re-examination of risk is necessary.

Use

The wood of Picea meyeri is used as construction wood, bridges and furniture, as well as for the production of poles and pulp. Furthermore, the species is planted as ornamental tree and for reforestation.

Picea meyeri is within the genre of spruce (Picea ) the subgenus Picea, Picea section, the subsection Picea and serial Asperatae assigned.

The first description as Picea meyeri was made in 1914 by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson in Plantae Wilsonianae to enumeration of the woody plants collected in western China for the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University falling on the years 1907, 1908 and 1910 by EH Wilson Charles Sprague Sargent edited by ..., Volume 2 (1 ), pp. 28-29. A synonym for Picea meyeri Rehder & E. H. Wilson is Picea mongolica ( H.Q. Wu ) W. D. Xu.
