Pickardt syndrome

The Pickardt syndrome (also Pickardt - Fahlbusch syndrome) is a tertiary hypothyroidism, that is, an underactive thyroid, which is caused by an interruption of the portal vascular system between the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.

Other endocrine disorders that may be associated with a Pickardt syndrome, are suprasellar failures as a secondary hypogonadism and a functional hyperprolactinemia.

A congenital variant of Pickardt - Fahlbusch syndrome is referred to as pituitary stalk interruption syndrome ( PSIS ). It is associated with mutations of the genes HESX1 and LHX4, but accounts for less than 5 % of cases.
