Pickering (Ontario)

Pickering is a city on Lake Ontario in the province of Ontario, Canada, about 31 km north-east of Toronto, with about 100,000 inhabitants ( 2009). It is located in the Golden Horseshoe, the central industrial region of Canada.

Pickering is part of the area around Toronto and the Regional Municipality of Durham. Pickering is bordered to the west by Toronto and on the east by the city of Ajax.

Economy

Pickering is home to the Pickering nuclear power plant, which has a capacity of 4,124 megawatts, with eight reactors. The nuclear power plant went into operation in 1971 and operated as the largest local employer by Ontario Power Generation. In 2001, a wind farm for power generation has been taken in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear power plant in operation.

In Pickering there are many manufacturing companies. A large company is Yorkville Sound, which develops Audio Equipment in Pickering and can produce in the factory. The headquarters of Purdue Pharma Canada, a us -pharma company is located in the city. Another larger companies Hubbell Canada, which manufactures electrical components.
