Picture Transfer Protocol

The Picture Transfer Protocol ( PTP) is a system developed by the International Imaging Industry Association protocol for transferring images between digital cameras and other devices such as computers or printers.

Operation

The advantage of the protocol over other solutions is that no additional device drivers are required: ie Each PTP - enabled device runs on each PTP - enabled device without additional effort.

The method was published as ISO 15740 in 2nd edition on April 15, 2011. It was originally intended only for USB connections, but was also on wireless connections (PTP / IP, Picture Transfer Protocol over Internet Protocol) extended. Not every camera manufacturer adheres fully to this standard. So it may be that some cameras support PTP indeed, but not all functions are available.

Although there is no established standard, the protocol is already used by many cameras and operating systems (eg Microsoft Windows from ME, Mac OS X, Linux and other Unix derivatives) supported. Even some portable music player ( such as various models from Cowon ) may appeal cameras via PTP, which makes it eg possible to create space on the storage medium of the camera on the music player by moving the photos.

In autumn 2004, was presented by Microsoft and Canon a development, the Media Transfer Protocol ( MTP).
