Picunches Department

The department Picunches lies in the west of the province of Neuquen in southern Argentina and is one of 16 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the Departamento Loncopue, on the east by the department of ANELO, to the south by the departments Zapala and Catán Lil, on the southwest by the Departamento Aluminé and to the west by Chile.

The capital of the department is Picunches Las Lajas.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population grew from 6,427 inhabitants (2001) to 7,164 inhabitants in 2005.

Cities and Towns

The department Picunches divided into a municipality of the second category (Las Lajas ), a third class municipality ( Covunco Abajo ) and two Comisiones de Fomento ( Bajada del Agrio and Quili Malal ). Other small settlements ( Parajes ) ​​are Agrio del Medio, La Buitrera, Mallin Quemado, Peña Haichol, San Demetrio and Villa del Agrio.
