Pieniny Pieniny or ( German formerly Crown Mountains) are a rugged mountain range northeast of the High Tatras in the Polish- Slovak border area on both sides of the Dunajec, breaking through the mountains.

Here the first international landscape park in Europe was founded on August 17, 1932. Today there are two national parks, one Polish and one Slovakian, the larger is in Poland.

It is known the area for its natural beauty, as the Trzy Korony (Polish, Slovak Tri Koruny, German Kronenberg ) - three limestone rocks in Dunajectal, with its highest point at 982 meters above sea level - and for raft trips on the border river Dunajec, which here by a partial only about 100 m wide gorge between up to 300 m high rock walls flows. At the western edge of the mountains, the Cerveny is Kláštor ( Red Monastery ).

Polish Pieniny National Park

The National Park on the Polish side, called in Polish Pieniny Park Narodowy, was founded in 1954.

The Kronenberg is located near the Slovak village Cerveny Kláštor (Lower Swabia) on the Polish side of the river. From the highest of the five about 100 m high rocky crags you can admire the Dunajec Gorge.

Slovak Pieniny National Park

The National Park Pieniny, Slovak Pieninský on Národný park, in the north-eastern Slovakia is 21.25 km ², the smallest Slovak national park. It was founded in 1967 and is the centerpiece of the Zamagurie ( German about the area behind the Magura ).

The National Park is located in the north of Okres Kežmarok and in the northwest of Stara Okres Ľubovňa at the state border with Poland, which is partly formed by the Dunajec.
